We live in a wonderful age where even low budget movies look great on home video. “Goodnight Mommy” has a couple of ‘odd’ moments, but for the most part plays things straight, allowing it to fall more in line with “We Need To Talk About Kevin” than most horror movies. This certainly helps pair it well with “The Babadook” since they share some ideas, but these movies couldn’t be any more different. Imagine being in a weakened state as the world collapses under the watchful eyes of the boys you love the most. On the flip side, a single mother is trying to recover from her procedure and losing her parental grip. Rather than lay down and accept the ‘stranger’ who is posing as their mother, they fight for answers. From the boys perspective, they feel lost and scared. The pace is slower and the horrors are more about a broken family dynamic rather than in slasher or monster form. This can be tough for millennial horror fans to sit through. Sure there are some uncomfortable moments, but Fiala and Franz make sure the story, not effects, are always front and center.
